About Us

Disability attorneys Judith Romanowski and Billie Guthrie represent claimants at all levels of the Social Security Administration (SSA) disability process.

Judith and Billie met when they worked together as affordable housing advocates for a local mental health program in Orange, Chatham and Person counties. Billie, who is also a social worker, and Judith, who is also a nurse, are committed to assisting those among us who are disabled and in need of the income they deserve.

We are active in our community, and we do pro bono work. Some of the groups we work with include:

  • Durham Disability Work Group, a cross discipline committee, including the Duke University Medical Center’s Local Access to Coordinated Health Care (LATCH) program
  • Lincoln Community Health Center, and Housing for New Hope
  • 100,000 Homes Task Force in Chapel Hill
  • North Carolina Advocates for Justice (NCAJ) Social Security Disability section
  • National Organization for Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR)
  • SOAR (SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access and Recovery)
  • Alliance Behavioral Health Care Reviews in Durham and Wake counties

  • We frequently give trainings for providers and community members, and we welcome you to contact us if you are interested.

    Judith Romanowski

Judith came to North Carolina from New York City by way of her volunteer work on an environmental project. She started her career in this area through managing housing programs for people with disabilities in the NC state mental health system. She quickly saw that she could better serve with her legal expertise, and she started a disability law practice in 2005. Judith is certified by the NC Bar as a specialist in Social Security disability law, and is a member of the NY Bar. With her unique background in nursing and law she is well suited to handle disability cases. Her extensive experience in health care includes oncology, hospice, and pediatrics. She has also practiced employment law, representing employees with the NYC firm of Eisenberg and Schnell, LLC. Prior to that, she worked for the Legal Aid Society in NYC for more than ten years, and served as the assistant managing attorney for the Criminal Appeals Bureau, and worked with a Buffalo law firm in the area of medical malpractice. In addition to being committed to her clients, she is devoted to her family, friends, and pets. She loves to travel, cook, laugh, walk, run, practice yoga, ride her bike, and simply be.
